DESCRIPTION:-------- WEDS TALKS: ARIZONA'S STATEWIDE ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECT
: WPA EMPLOYMENT, EXPERTISE, AND ARCHAEOLOGY [1] ----------------------
----\n\n**\n\n*ABSTRACT:* This talk will explore Arizona's WPA-funded Stat
ewide Archaeological Project, which sponsored archaeological research at
5 separate locations across the state between 1938 -1940. Archival recor
ds at the Arizona State Museum reveal significant insights into the proje
ct, which employed individuals under four primary payment/skill categori
es including unskilled, intermediate, skilled, and professional/techni
cal classifications. Built on job titles previously defined by the federa
l government, these were expanded during Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New
Deal. Job titles and descriptions developed during this period continue
to have ramifications for federal archaeological and conservation positio
ns, as well as compensatory rates in the 21st century. The role of exper
tise and skill utilized by WPA employees in archaeological research produ
ced by the Statewide Archaeological Project is examined, as well as thei
r impact on subsequent archaeological results/products.\n\n*BIO**:* Dr. C
aitlin R. O’Grady is a conservator and conservation scientist specializin
g in analysis and preservation of archaeological materials. She is curren
tly Assistant Professor in the UCLA Department of Anthropology and UCLA/G
etty Program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage. In this capacity,
she teaches and advises undergraduate and graduate students in Anthropol
ogy and Conservation, as well as conducts research in the history of con
servation and archaeology disciplines, and pottery manufacture/degradati
 on.\n\nDate: Wednesday, November 4, 2026 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\n
