Luis Jaime Castillo Butters, Ph.D. 2012, elected to National Academy of Sciences


Cotsen Institute graduate Dr. Luis Jaime Castillo Butters, currently professor of archaeology at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica in Peru, has been elected foreign associate to the National Academy of Sciences. The National Academy of Sciences announced the election of 100 new members and 25 foreign associates in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. 

Castillo Butters is a specialist in archaeological theory, the use of analytical technologies and in various aspects of the Mochica, Wari and Cajamarca societies, funerary practices, iconography and ideology. He is co-editor of Latin American Antiquity, Member of the Ethics Committee of the Society of American Archaeology, and Vice Minister of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Industries in Peru. He has published and edited books and articles about the Mochicas, Pre-Columbian Art, Cultural Heritage in Peru, and the use of drones in archaeology.
