From the Field: St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

Justin Dunnavant, assistant professor of anthropology and core faculty member of the Cotsen

Institute, returned to the Estate Little Princess for the first time since the pandemic began to continue archaeological excavations at the 18th century Danish sugar plantation. Dunnavant was accompanied by four UC-HBCU students, in addition to Darartu Mulugeta (UCLA undergraduate Bunche Fellow), Nicole Smith (UCLA anthropology graduate student), and colleagues from UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and the California Academy of Sciences. Excavations explored the extent of the enslaved village community, as well as the architecture of cabins and daily life of enslaved Africans on the plantation.
